Jaw Joint Diseases and Treatment

The joint that connects our lower jaw to our skull is our jaw joint, and thanks to this joint, we can talk and eat. The one-sided chewing habit that settles as a result of the gap formed in the tooth row as a result of permanent tooth loss in the early period; trauma; incorrectly planned prosthesis; various joint ailments; infection; Disturbances in the jaw joint may occur due to reasons such as clenching and grinding of teeth. Generally, the common complaints of patients are inability to open the mouth sufficiently, noise from the joint during opening and closing, waking up with pain in the jaw joint in the morning, pain in the head and neck region. The course of treatment is decided after the necessary examinations are made.

Teeth Clenching (Brusxism) and Temporamandibular Disorders

Teeth Clenching (Brusxism)
Teeth clenching or grinding (bruxism) is a very common undesirable habit. In patients who clench their teeth, pain may occur especially in the temples and in front of the ear, and this pain may be reflected in the neck area or even the back area. Teeth wear, sensitivity and fractures may occur inside the mouth. Pain due to teeth clenching can be treated with special plates called splints. Botulinum toxin (botox) can be applied as supportive treatment when the dentist deems it necessary.

Temporamandibular Disorders (TMR)
These are problems occurring in the tissues of the jaw joint. Clinical symptoms include limitation in opening the mouth, pain while chewing, and a clicking sound coming from the jaw joint. In the treatment, patients are made to use special plates called splints.
